Why Google isn't showing your business to the people searching for you right now

August 26, 2026

Somebody in your area searched for your service today. Google did not show your business. Here is why.

This is not bad luck. It is not because your competitors are doing something clever. It is because Google has a set of things it needs to see before it will show a local business in its results, and right now, yours is not giving Google enough to work with.

That is fixable. But first, you need to understand how Google makes its decisions.

How Google decides which local businesses to show, and what it needs from yours

When someone types "plumber in Banbury" or "electrician near me" into Google, Google does not just pick a name at random. It runs through a set of signals to decide which businesses are relevant, trustworthy, and worth showing.

There are three things Google is weighing up every time it decides whether to show a local business.

Relevance
is whether your business matches what the person searched for. Google needs to understand what you do, where you do it, and who you serve. If your Google Business Profile says "general contractor" and someone searches for "boiler service in Swindon", Google may not connect the dots.

Distance
is how close your business is to the person searching. This matters, but it is not the only factor. A business five miles away with strong signals will often outrank a business two miles away with weak ones.

Prominence
is how well-known and trusted Google thinks your business is. This is where most service businesses fall short. Prominence is built from reviews, your website, mentions of your business across the web, and how complete your Google Business Profile is.

Google needs all three. If you are missing signals in any one of them, your chances of appearing drop sharply.

The four most common reasons a service business does not appear in local results

Most service businesses that are invisible on Google are invisible for one or more of these four reasons. None of them are complicated. All of them are solvable.

Your Google Business Profile is incomplete or unclaimed.
Your Google Business Profile (often called a GBP) is the listing that appears when someone searches for your business by name, or when Google shows a map of local results. If you have not claimed yours, or if it is only half-filled in, Google has very little to work with. A complete profile includes your business category, your service areas, your opening hours, photos, a description of what you do, and a list of your services. Many trades businesses have a profile that was auto-generated by Google years ago and never touched. That profile is doing nothing for you.

You have very few reviews, or none at all.
Reviews are one of the strongest signals Google uses to judge prominence. A roofing company in Oxford with 40 reviews will almost always outrank a roofing company in Oxford with four. It is not just the number of reviews that matters. It is how recent they are, whether you respond to them, and whether they mention the kind of work you do. A review that says "replaced our flat roof in Kidlington, brilliant job" is worth more than one that just says "great service". Most service businesses know they should be getting more reviews. Very few have a system for actually asking.

Your website is not sending the right signals.
Google looks at your website to understand what you do and where you do it. If your website does not mention the towns and areas you serve, does not have pages dedicated to your key services, and does not make clear that you are a local business, Google will not know how to rank you for local searches. A one-page website with a phone number and a contact form is not enough. Google needs content it can read, understand, and match to what people are searching for. This does not mean writing thousands of words. It means making sure the right information is clearly on the page.

You have no local citations.
A local citation is any mention of your business name, address, and phone number on another website. This includes directories like Checkatrade, Yell, and Trustpilot, trade association websites, and local business listings. These mentions act as confirmation signals for Google. They tell it that you are a real, established business operating in a specific area. If your business only exists on your own website and nowhere else, Google has less reason to trust the information you are giving it. Consistency matters too. If your address or phone number appears differently across different sites, that creates confusion, and Google does not reward confusion.

Most service businesses that are invisible on Google are missing signals in at least two of these four areas. Sometimes all four.

What fixing your Google visibility actually involves

The good news is that none of this requires technical knowledge. It requires time, attention to detail, and doing the right things in the right order.

Start with your Google Business Profile. Claim it if you have not already, and fill in every section. Choose the most specific category that fits your business. Add your service areas. List your individual services. Upload photos of your work, your van, your team. Write a description that mentions what you do and where you do it. This alone can make a noticeable difference. You can read more about what a complete profile looks like on our [[Google Business Profile]] page.

Then look at your reviews. If you have fewer than ten, getting that number up should be your next priority. Ask every happy customer. Make it easy for them by sending a direct link to your Google review page. Do not wait for people to leave reviews on their own, because most will not unless you ask. And when reviews come in, respond to them. Even a short, genuine reply shows Google that you are an active, engaged business.

After that, look at your website. Does it mention the towns and areas you cover? Does it have a separate page for each of your main services? Does it make clear that you are a local business serving real people in a specific area? If not, those are the gaps to fill. Our [[Google visibility]] services are built around exactly this kind of work, specifically for trades and local service businesses.

Finally, get your business listed on the main directories. Checkatrade, Yell, Yelp, and your trade association's website are good places to start. Make sure your business name, address, and phone number are identical on every one of them. Small inconsistencies add up.

This is the work. It is not glamorous. It is not quick. But it is what separates the businesses that appear on the first page of Google from the ones that do not.

We have worked with 127 service businesses across the UK on exactly this. Electricians, plumbers, landscapers, roofers, heating engineers, and more. The businesses that commit to getting their Google presence in order consistently win more enquiries from people who were already searching for what they offer. They do not need to shout louder. They just need to be findable.

If you are not sure why your business is not showing up, or you want someone to look at your profile and website and tell you honestly what is holding you back, that is what we are here for.

Book a free discovery call through our [[contact]] page and we will walk you through exactly what is working, what is not, and what to do about it.
